LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS

On the last part of the course, we studied the comunicative functions described by Roman Jakobson:
  • emotive function,
  • conative function,
  • referential function,
  • phatic function,
  • metalinguistic function, and
  • poetic function.

A brief description of each function can be found at http://www.uni-kassel.de/fb8/misc/lfb/html/text/6-4.html .

In the portfolio, the material used in this section of the course has been organized in the following order:

  1. Study Guide: Jakobson's Model of Communicative Functions.
  2. Assignment: Texts that use different language functions (poem, recipe, piece of news, letter to editor and advertisement).
